If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding in your house right now, stop reading. Get everyone out to fresh air, pets included, and call 911 or your local fire department from outside. (2)

Carbon monoxide testing in Smithville covers two separate questions: whether your alarms meet Ontario’s rules, and whether your fuel-burning appliances are burning the way they should. This page sets out both, along with the sources that are not your furnace and what changes the cost.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms Are the Law in Ontario, and the Rules Change on 1 January 2026

Ontario requires carbon monoxide alarms in any home with a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage. (1) The rule also covers heated air that reaches the house from a fuel-burning appliance located outside it. (1)

  • Adjacent to each sleeping area, near all the bedrooms. (1)
  • On every storey, including storeys with no bedroom on them. (1)
  • From 1 January 2026, the requirements reach existing homes: detached and semi-detached houses, townhomes and cottages. (1)

Work that through on a real house. A two-storey Smithville home with the bedrooms upstairs, a main floor and a basement needs three alarms: one in the upstairs hallway outside the bedrooms, one on the main floor, and one in the basement. The bedroom rule and the storey rule are separate requirements rather than alternatives, which is what produces the third.

The Fire Code permits hardwired alarms, battery-operated ones, plug-in devices, and combined units carrying a smoke alarm and a CO alarm together. (1) Whichever you buy, look for the mark of a recognized standards testing agency: CSA, ULC or Intertek (ETL). (1) Those agencies test alarms against Canadian performance standards. (1)

Responsibility follows occupancy. The homeowner is responsible in an owner-occupied house and the landlord in a rental. (1) Enforcement belongs to neither us nor TSSA. Your local fire department is the authority that enforces the Fire Code in your area, so a question about your own house goes to them. (1)

Attached garages are named in the rule, and most of the newer Smithville subdivisions have one.

How to Tell Carbon Monoxide Poisoning From the Flu

The symptoms look like flu, which is exactly the problem. TSSA lists nausea, headache, burning eyes, confusion and drowsiness. (2) A lower exposure shows as shortness of breath, mild headache and nausea. (2)

Two things tell them apart.

  • There is no fever with carbon monoxide poisoning. (2) Flu usually brings one.
  • The symptoms fade once the person gets outside into fresh air. (2) A flu does not improve because somebody stepped into the driveway.

Children show it first. Infants and children absorb carbon monoxide faster than adults because their metabolic rate is higher, so the signs appear in them sooner. (2)

Timing is part of this. From October the house is shut up and the furnace is running, so a cracked heat exchanger or a blocked vent that made no difference in July starts to matter.

What a Gas Technician Checks on a Carbon Monoxide Test in Smithville

Ontario reserves this work. Registered Fuels Contractors are the only businesses legally authorized to do fuels-related work in the province. (5) Mike Peddle holds a TSSA Gas Technician certificate and a TSSA Heating Contractor registration.

What gets examined comes down to how an appliance is burning and where its exhaust goes. TSSA’s guidance is to have the heating system, the fireplace and the flue inspected and cleaned by a qualified technician every year, and to make sure every fuel-burning appliance has an adequate air supply. (3) A burner flame should be blue and steady. A yellow or lifting flame means the appliance is short of air.

You can check us, and here is how. TSSA publishes a public registry of Registered Fuels Contractors, searchable by name or by city. (5) Two caveats come from TSSA itself: the city shown is where a contractor’s main office sits rather than everywhere they work, and the list is updated at the start of each month. (5) Every entry carries a registration number.

TSSA will also mail a free inspection reminder sticker to any Ontario address, to put on your fuel-burning appliances. (7)

The Carbon Monoxide Sources That Are Not Your Furnace

Your furnace is one source. TSSA’s own list also names fireplaces, dryers, stoves, water heaters, barbecues and portable generators. (4)

  • Never run a portable fuel-fired appliance indoors or in a garage. That covers a barbecue, a portable generator, a patio heater and a camp stove. (3)
  • Never leave a car, mower or ATV running in an attached garage, and an open door does not make it safe. (3)
  • Never block or seal an exhaust flue for a water heater, a range or a clothes dryer. (3)
  • Keep the chimney clear of bird and squirrel nests, leaves and other debris. (3) A blocked chimney sends exhaust back down into the house instead of out of it.
  • Have gas fireplaces checked each fall, so the pilot light burns safely. (3)

Out toward Caledonia a portable generator is ordinary equipment on a rural property rather than an emergency purchase, and TSSA lists one as a source. (4)

What to Do When a Carbon Monoxide Alarm Sounds

Get everyone out to fresh air, pets included, and call 911 or your local fire department from outside. (2) The fire department or the utility will help find the source and make sure the building is safe. (2) Enbridge answers a natural gas emergency line 24 hours a day on 1-866-763-5427. (6)

That order puts us second, and it should. We are not the people who make a building safe while an alarm is going off. We are the people you book afterwards, once the fire department or the utility has done that, to find what produced the gas and put it right.

What Affects Carbon Monoxide Testing Cost in Smithville

  • How many fuel-burning appliances are in the house. Each one is its own check, and TSSA’s list of sources runs well past the furnace. (4)
  • Whether it is booked alongside the annual furnace service or on its own.
  • How reachable the appliances and their venting are.
  • The age of the venting. In an older Smithville house appliances were added across decades and the venting grew with them.
  • Where the property sits. Caledonia and West Lincoln are the far end of the run.

Carbon Monoxide Questions From Smithville Homeowners

What is the new carbon monoxide alarm rule in Ontario for 2026?

From 1 January 2026 the requirements extend to existing homes, including detached and semi-detached houses, townhomes and cottages. (1) The placement rule is unchanged: an alarm adjacent to each sleeping area, and one on every storey including storeys without bedrooms. (1)

Can I install a carbon monoxide alarm myself?

For a battery-operated or plug-in unit, yes, because the Fire Code permits both types. (1) A hardwired alarm is electrical work. Check the mark on whichever you buy: CSA, ULC or Intertek (ETL). (1)

How do I know if my furnace is producing carbon monoxide?

An alarm is the only thing in the house that will tell you, which is why the placement rule matters. (1) Finding the cause is the technician’s part, and it starts with how the appliance is burning and where the exhaust is going. (3)

Should I leave the house if the carbon monoxide alarm goes off?

Yes, and take pets with you. Everyone needs to be out in fresh air before anything else, then call 911 or your local fire department from outside. (2) They will help find the source and confirm the building is safe before anyone goes back in. (2)

How can I check that a contractor is allowed to do this work?

Search TSSA’s public registry of Registered Fuels Contractors by name or by city. (5) Registered Fuels Contractors are the only businesses legally authorized to do fuels-related work in Ontario, so the registry is the check. (5)
