Natural gas is safe, efficient and affordable — right up until it is installed or repaired by someone who is not qualified to touch it. In Ontario, that is not an opinion. It is the law.
Environmental Heating & Cooling is a TSSA-certified gas contractor based in Smithville, Ontario. We install, repair and inspect gas lines and gas appliances across West Lincoln, Grimsby, Beamsville, Stoney Creek, Winona, Ancaster, Caledonia, Binbrook and Dunnville. Every gas job we do is completed by a certified technician, permitted where required, and pressure-tested before we leave.
Why TSSA Certification Matters
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority regulates all fuel-gas work in Ontario. Installing, altering or repairing a natural gas line or a gas appliance connection legally requires a certified gas technician. It is not a job for a general handyman, and it is not a DIY project.
There are three practical reasons this matters to you as a homeowner:
Your Insurance
If uncertified gas work contributes to a fire or an explosion, an insurer can deny the claim. The saving on a cheap install disappears the moment something goes wrong.
Your Home Sale
Uncertified gas work shows up in home inspections. Buyers ask for it to be corrected before closing, usually at the seller’s expense and usually under time pressure.
Your Safety
A poorly made gas connection does not always fail immediately. It can leak slowly for months. Carbon monoxide from an improperly vented appliance has no smell and no colour.
Our Gas Services
We handle both sides of gas work — putting gas in, and keeping it safe once it is there.
Gas Installation
Everything that puts gas somewhere new — sizing the supply, running the pipe, fitting the valve and proving the system before it is used.
Gas Line Installation
New natural gas piping, sized for its load and pressure-tested. Interior runs, exterior runs and buried lines to a detached garage, pool heater or outdoor kitchen.
Gas Line Repair
Failed joints, corroded sections, seized valves and damaged pipe. We repair the cause rather than patching the one point that happened to leak first.
Gas Leak Detection
Electronic detection, joint-by-joint confirmation and section pressure testing to find a leak — including buried lines, which are traced before anyone digs.
Gas Appliance Installation
Ranges, dryers, barbecues, garage and shop heaters, pool heaters and standby generators connected, vented and combustion-tested.
Gas Fireplace Installation
Inserts, built-in units and freestanding stoves, including chimney lining and direct-vent runs. Many models keep working in a power cut.
Gas Safety Inspection
An annual check of piping, valves, connectors, venting, combustion air and your carbon monoxide alarms — before a small fault becomes an emergency.
Signs You Need a Gasfitter
Some of these are emergencies. Some are simply overdue maintenance. All of them are worth a phone call.
- A smell of rotten eggs or sulphur. Natural gas has no natural odour, so an odourant is added specifically so you can detect a leak. If you smell it, treat it as real.
- A hissing or whistling sound near a gas line, meter or appliance connection.
- Dead or dying vegetation in a line over your buried gas service, with no other explanation.
- A yellow or orange burner flame where it should be crisp and blue. This can indicate incomplete combustion.
- Soot or black scorch marks around an appliance.
- Headaches, dizziness or nausea that improve when you leave the house. This is a possible carbon monoxide symptom and needs immediate attention.
- An unexplained jump in your gas bill with no change in usage.
If You Smell Gas Right Now
Do not wait for a service call. Take these steps first:
- Do not switch anything electrical on or off — including light switches, thermostats and garage door openers. A spark is a spark.
- Do not use a phone inside the building.
- Leave the building, and take everyone with you.
- From outside, call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427. Their emergency line is open 24 hours a day.
- Call 911 if anyone feels unwell.
Once the leak is made safe, call us and we will repair the line or the appliance connection properly.
Gas Work and Your Heating System
Most of the gas appliances in an Ontario home are heating appliances. A furnace, a boiler and a gas water heater all rely on a correctly sized gas supply and a correctly vented exhaust. Gas work and heating work are not separate trades in practice, and having one company handle both means nothing gets missed at the handoff.
That matters most during a furnace or boiler replacement. A new high-efficiency appliance often has different gas and venting requirements than the unit it replaced, and a straight swap without checking the supply is a common shortcut.
