HVAC in Haldimand County, Ontario
Haldimand County stretches from the Grand River to the north shore of Lake Erie, about 1,250 square kilometres holding just over 49,000 people. The Canadian Encyclopedia describes the land as primarily agricultural, spread around six towns, with the County’s offices in Cayuga. HVAC in Haldimand County means old farmhouses, mixed fuels and a different water supply depending on the village. We are Environmental Heating & Cooling, a family business working out of Smithville since 2014 and rated 5.0 on Google. Cayuga is about 27 minutes from our base.
A Third of Haldimand’s Homes Were Built Before 1961
The 2021 census counted 18,720 occupied homes in the county. Of those, 6,005 were built in 1960 or earlier, and more than half date from before 1981. Most are detached houses, many of them on farm lots.
A farmhouse that old has usually been heated several different ways over its life. Out on the rural roads, many still run on propane, oil, electric baseboard or a wood stove, sometimes more than one at once. That fuel changes the advice:
- Oil: a cold-climate heat pump usually costs far less to run, so price one before you buy another oil furnace.
- Propane: the gap is smaller, but a heat pump is still worth pricing, with the propane furnace kept as backup.
- Electric baseboard: a heat pump heats for much less and adds air conditioning the house never had.
In the last two years alone, we have installed heating, cooling or water heating equipment in more than 30 Haldimand County homes, and ten of them now run on a heat pump. One of our customers summed up that choice in a Google review:
“We opted for a full heat pump solution and water heater and we are very happy with the results.” — Peter R.
Grand River Heating Customers Are Now Ours
We took over the customers of Grand River Heating, and many of them live in Haldimand County. About a third of the homes above were Grand River customers first. If Grand River used to look after your furnace, air conditioner or water heater, you can call us about it now.
What Comes Out of the Tap Depends on the Village
Haldimand runs more than one water system. Cayuga and York receive water from the City of Hamilton, drawn from Lake Ontario. Hagersville, Jarvis and Townsend are on the Nanticoke system, which takes its water from Lake Erie.
The County’s 2023 report rates Nanticoke’s water as moderately hard to hard, with samples between 108 and 112 mg/L. The report itself names calcium and magnesium as the main cause of scale in water heaters. Over years, that scale builds up inside the tank and makes the heater work harder for the same hot water. A tankless heater collects it in its narrow passages, so it needs flushing on a schedule.
Outside the towns, many homes rely on a private well. Grand Erie Public Health tests well water for bacteria at no charge, but that test says nothing about minerals. If your water heater keeps scaling up, ask us about water treatment.
Farms, Shops and Open Country
Rural Haldimand properties come with workshops, garages and barns, and many of them need heat. Gas or propane lines to those buildings have often been added by several people over many years. If nobody knows who ran yours, a gas safety inspection is the place to start.
Open fields also leave houses exposed. A farmhouse that takes the full wind loses heat faster than a sheltered one of the same size, and blowing snow can bury an outdoor unit in the wrong spot. We look at both before choosing equipment.
Not every building is lived in all year. On census day, about 2,000 of the county’s 20,710 dwellings had nobody living in them as their usual home, a count that includes seasonal cottages along Lake Erie. If yours sits empty through the winter, decide before you leave whether to keep it heated or drain the plumbing.

Questions From Haldimand Homeowners
Our farmhouse still has an oil furnace. Should we replace it with another furnace or a heat pump? Price a cold-climate heat pump first, because moving off oil usually saves the most. If you want backup for the coldest nights, a dual-fuel set-up pairs the heat pump with a furnace. If the old furnace simply needs furnace repair in the meantime, we can do that while you decide.
Grand River Heating used to service our furnace. Can you take over? Yes. We took over Grand River Heating’s customers, so call the office and we will book a visit.
Is the town water in Hagersville or Jarvis hard enough to affect a water heater? It can be. The County rates the Nanticoke system’s water as moderately hard to hard, and names scale in water heaters as one result. Regular flushing helps, and water treatment tackles the cause.
What should I do if I smell gas? Leave the building first. For natural gas, call Enbridge Gas on 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from outside; for propane, call your propane supplier. Once the gas is off and the house is safe, we can find and repair the leak.
