Free quotes and financing on new systems
Air purification in Smithville is what gets added to a furnace quote when the problem is not dust. These systems act on microbes and on gases, which a filter does not catch, and the market around them is full of claims nobody can check. This page gives you a test you can run yourself before anything goes into your ductwork.
What Air Purification Does That a Furnace Filter Cannot
A filter catches particles as the air passes through it, and particles are not the whole problem. Microbes grow on the wet metal inside your air conditioner, and the gases behind most household smells are far too small for any filter to stop.
Those problems come in an order, and it is worth knowing Health Canada’s before you buy anything. Reducing or eliminating the source comes first. Ventilating with filtered outdoor air comes second. Filtering the indoor air comes third. (1)
Purification is not on that list at all. That does not make it useless, but it does mean a device sold as a replacement for the two cheaper answers is being sold badly.
People in Smithville ask about this from November onward because the house is shut. The same air goes round the ducts for four months, and whatever is in it has nowhere to go.
How a UV-C Lamp Works Inside a Smithville Furnace and Ductwork
A UV-C lamp is a light fitted inside the furnace cabinet or the ductwork. UV-C is the short-wavelength part of ultraviolet light, and it damages microorganisms. (2)
Most lamps go at the cooling coil, which is the cold metal your air conditioner runs the air through. The coil stays wet all summer, because that is where humidity condenses out of the air, and wet metal in the dark is where mold grows. A lamp there works on that surface continuously.
The air is a different question, and this is the part worth understanding. Air moving down a duct is lit only for the moment it takes to pass the lamp. So where the lamp sits and how much of the duct it reaches decide what it can do to anything travelling past. Placement matters more than the wattage on the box.
We fit UV light air purification, and it means opening the furnace cabinet, which is why the registration matters: Mike Peddle holds a TSSA Heating Contractor registration. Older cabinets in Smithville and Grimsby often have very little spare room inside, and that is the first thing we measure.
Ozone Is the Part Nobody Selling You One Mentions
Some air cleaning devices make ozone, and ozone irritates the lungs. The recommended residential limit is 40 micrograms per cubic metre, or 20 parts per billion, averaged over eight hours. (3) Micrograms per cubic metre is the weight of a gas in a given volume of air.
Start with the reassuring half, because it is true. Ozone levels in Canadian homes are typically below that limit, and Health Canada says they are not a health concern for most homeowners. (4)
The devices are the exception. Canada advises against using ozone generators in homes: they are sold as indoor air cleaners, and the level of ozone they produce may harm your health. (4) The guidance for indoor air quality professionals names electrostatic precipitators, certain ultraviolet generators and portable air cleaners among the indoor sources of ozone. (1) It also says some available ozone-generating devices claim to improve air quality, which is not true. (1)
This is measured, not argued: the National Research Council runs a facility built in part to measure ozone coming off powered air filter systems. (5)
In a Beamsville or Grimsby house shut from November to March, anything a device adds to the air stays in it. Ask before it goes in the duct, not after.
Check a Device Is Registered in Canada Before It Goes in Your House
Here is the test, and you can run it in about two minutes. In Canada, certain ultraviolet radiation-emitting and ozone-generating devices must be registered by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency before they may be sold or used. (6) Unregistered devices are prohibited unless they are exempt, and they may face enforcement action. (6)
Every registered device is listed in the federal Pesticide Product Information Database. (6) So ask whoever is quoting you for the registration number of the exact model, then look the number up in that database. If there is no number, that is your answer.
One caution belongs next to this. Health Canada says it has not received enough evidence to confirm that all of these devices are safe to use or that they are effective. (6) Registration means the device is allowed to be sold here. It is not a finding that it works.
That matters most out in West Lincoln, where a device bought online arrives with nobody to ask.
What Affects Air Purification Cost in Smithville
Five things about the job move the quote:
- which technology it is, because a lamp at the coil and a ducted cabinet are different installations
- where the lamp or cabinet can physically go in the furnace and ductwork you already have
- whether the ductwork has to be opened to fit it
- how often the lamp has to be replaced, which is a running cost rather than an installation one
- how far the property sits from the office, out toward Caledonia and rural West Lincoln
The ductwork is the item that moves most. Original ductwork in an older Smithville house was built for the furnace of its day, and a cabinet needs a straight run with room around it that the house may not have.
Air Purification Questions From Smithville Homeowners
Do UV air purifiers actually work in a Smithville home?
They act on microbes at the cooling coil and on what passes the lamp in the duct. Health Canada has not received enough evidence to confirm that all of these devices are safe to use or that they are effective, so treat any specific figure you are quoted with care. (6)
Will an air purifier get rid of cooking and pet smells?
Not on its own. Removing the source comes first in Health Canada’s order, ventilating with filtered outdoor air second, and filtering the indoor air third. (1)
Is a UV lamp in the ductwork safe for my family?
The lamp sits inside sealed ductwork, so the light stays in the duct. The safety question worth asking is about ozone instead. (3)(4)
Do I need air purification if I already have a good filter?
Only if what is bothering you is not particles. A filter and a purifier do different jobs, and a good filter already handles the dust.
Can I buy an air purifier online and have you fit it?
Ask for the registration number first. An unregistered ultraviolet or ozone-generating device is prohibited in Canada unless it is exempt, so that number decides whether it can go in at all. (6)
Book an Air Purification Visit in Smithville
