Your furnace has stopped, or it is running and the house is still cold. Either way the first question is which part has failed. Five things are worth checking yourself before you book furnace repair in Smithville, and none of them means opening the furnace. Past the front panel the work is regulated in Ontario, and only a TSSA-certified gas technician may do it.

Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair in Smithville

  • The furnace runs but the air is not warm. The blower is turning while the burners are not lit, so air moves through the house without ever being heated.
  • It starts and stops every few minutes. This is short cycling, which means switching on and off too often, and something is shutting the furnace down before it finishes a heating cycle.
  • A bang, a screech or a rumble at start-up. Either a moving part is failing, or the ignition is arriving late and lighting gas that has already built up.
  • One room is cold while the rest of the house is fine. In older Smithville and Grimsby houses that is often the ductwork rather than the furnace. Air escaping through a bad joint before the register never arrives at the register.
  • The gas bill climbs on a thermostat nobody moved. It is burning for longer to deliver the same heat.
  • Soot around a register. Soot is exhaust that is not all leaving through the vent, which makes it a combustion problem rather than a comfort problem.

Enbridge Gas tells homeowners to keep gas appliances supplied with enough air, and to make sure venting ends outdoors and is not cracked, corroded or blocked. (1) A blocked vent usually trips the furnace’s own safety control and stops it, which is the furnace protecting the house rather than the furnace breaking.

What to Check Before You Call Us, and Where to Stop

Five things are worth checking before you book a repair. None of them needs a tool, and none needs to take off the front panel.

1. The thermostat is set to Heat, and set a few degrees higher than the room temperature it is showing, so the furnace has a reason to start. 2. The thermostat batteries. 3. The furnace switch on the wall beside it, which looks like an ordinary light switch. 4. The breaker marked furnace. 5. The filter. A filter that is grey the whole way through restricts airflow enough to shut a furnace down by itself. (1)

If one of those five was the problem, you have just fixed it yourself and the furnace should start. If all five check out and it still will not run, the problem is behind the front panel, and that is the point to call us.

Stop there. Do not open the furnace, relight anything, or touch the gas.

The reason to stop is legal as much as practical. A gas furnace is a fuel-burning appliance, and Ontario regulates who may install, maintain or alter one, with TSSA issuing those certificates under the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000. (4)

If you smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, none of the above applies. Health Canada’s instruction is to leave immediately, not to look for the source, and to call 9-1-1 once you are outside. (2) Enbridge answers its own gas emergency line 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on 1-866-763-5427. (6) A furnace that quit overnight in January is a repair call. A gas smell is not a repair call.

What Happens on a Furnace Repair Visit in Smithville

The visit starts with what you tell us: what the furnace is doing now, when you first noticed it, and whether anything else in the house changed around the same time. That narrows the search before we take a panel off.

From there we trace it back to the part that caused it, rather than to the part that is easiest to change. On a gas furnace that is usually the igniter, the flame sensor, the limit switch, the inducer motor or the control board, and telling those five apart is the job.

Then we check the other gas appliances in the house. In October 2025 TSSA prosecuted a certified G2 gas technician who had shut off and later restored a home’s gas supply. (3) Doing that made him responsible for confirming that every gas appliance in the house was operating safely, and he did not. (3) A pool heater in that house was improperly vented and had a safety valve that failed to shut it off when it became unsafe. (3) Three children were poisoned by carbon monoxide. (3) That technician held a certificate and his company was registered. The certificate was not the problem. The work was.

Last, we run the furnace through a full cycle before leaving, because a furnace that starts is not yet a furnace that finishes and shuts down properly.

Mike Peddle holds a TSSA Gas Technician certificate and a TSSA Heating Contractor registration, which are classes TSSA issues for regulated fuels work in Ontario. (4) We also work in Beamsville, Caledonia and West Lincoln.

Carbon Monoxide Is Why a Furnace Repair Has to Be Done Properly

Carbon monoxide has no smell, no taste and no colour, and an alarm is the only way to find it. (5) Breathing it reduces your blood’s ability to carry oxygen, and it does that before you notice anything is wrong. (5)

The indoor risk is highest in fall and winter, because most homes in Canada are heated by appliances that burn fuel. (5) Furnaces sit on Health Canada’s own list of household sources, alongside fireplaces, wood and pellet stoves, dryers and hot water tanks. (5)

This is why a new rattle is worth a call now rather than in spring. The heat exchanger is the metal wall between the burner flame and the air being blown into your rooms. A crack in that wall lets combustion gas cross into the air the furnace is circulating, and nothing in the house announces it.

Health Canada puts the most important alarm in the hallway outside each sleeping area. (2) It also asks for a professional inspection of every fuel-burning appliance at least once a year, or as often as the manufacturer’s instructions say. (2)

What Affects Furnace Repair Cost in Smithville

Five things move the cost of a repair, and not one of them is visible until the panels are off.

  • Which part failed. An igniter and a control board are different jobs.
  • Whether that part is still made for that furnace.
  • How old the furnace is, because the same repair at year eight and at year nineteen are different decisions.
  • What the vent and the gas connection look like once the furnace is open.
  • How far out the property sits, toward Caledonia or West Lincoln.

Enbridge Gas does not repair furnaces itself and points homeowners to a TSSA-registered contractor instead. (1) That is the right instinct, because a real number only comes from whoever has had the panels off.

If the repair is starting to look like the wrong answer, the furnaces page sets out when to fix one and when to buy a new one.

Furnace Repair Questions From Smithville Homeowners

Why did my furnace suddenly stop working?

Most often the thermostat, the filter, the breaker or the furnace switch, and those four are the ones you can check yourself. Beyond them, a failed igniter or a safety control that has tripped will also stop a furnace, and neither is a homeowner repair in Ontario. (4)

Why is my furnace running but blowing cold air?

The blower is working and the burners are not lit. That splits three ways: an ignition problem, a gas supply problem, or a safety control that has shut the burners down and left the fan running. Which one it is decides the repair.

Can I reset my furnace myself?

The breaker and the furnace switch, yes. Anything past the front panel, no. Ontario regulates who may maintain or alter a fuel-burning appliance, and TSSA issues the certificates for it. (4)

My furnace is off and the house is cold. What do I do?

Call the office and describe what the furnace is doing and when it stopped. If you can smell gas, or a CO alarm is sounding, that comes first: leave, do not look for the source, and call 9-1-1 once you are outside. (2)

Is it worth repairing an old furnace?

That depends on the age of the furnace and on what the repair costs against a new one. Hydro One sets out two Ontario tests for exactly this question, and the furnaces page works through both.
