Smithville Homes and What They Need
The Village Core
Older homes around the centre of town were built long before anyone worried about airtightness. Heating systems in them have usually been replaced more than once, often without the ductwork ever being reassessed. The common complaint is a room at the far end of the house that never warms up — and the usual fix is ductwork, not a bigger furnace.
Where an addition or a finished attic has no practical duct route at all, ductless mini splits solve the problem without tearing the house apart.
The Newer Subdivisions
Homes built in the last twenty years are tight and well insulated. That keeps bills down and traps everything else in — which is why we get calls about condensation on windows in January and dry, static air by February, often from the same house in the same winter. Humidifiers, dehumidifiers and air filtration are the part the builder left out.
A tight, modern house is also the best possible home for a cold-climate heat pump.
Out on the Township
West Lincoln beyond the town limits is farmland, and rural properties change the conversation. Many are not on natural gas — propane, oil and electric baseboard are all common — and many are on well water.
If you heat with oil or propane, a heat pump is worth costing properly before you replace like with like. The running-cost gap is far wider than it is for a gas customer, and the incentives for getting off oil have been the strongest in the market. Hard or iron-heavy well water also quietly destroys water heaters — if yours failed sooner than it should have, water treatment is the fix that stops it happening twice.
Away From Lake Ontario
Grimsby, Beamsville and Winona sit on the lake side of the escarpment and get its moderating effect. Smithville does not. We are inland and higher, and we see colder overnight temperatures than the lakeshore towns do.
That matters for sizing. A system specified from square footage alone, using numbers that suit a bungalow in Beamsville, will be working harder here on the coldest nights. It also makes the difference between an ordinary heat pump and a true cold-climate model a real one — the Mitsubishi Zuba and Bosch systems we install are built to hold their output well below freezing.
