A gas leak is not always dramatic. Most of the ones we find are small, slow and had been there a while before anyone noticed. They are also, almost always, straightforward to fix once someone qualified has located them.

Environmental Heating & Cooling repairs gas piping across Smithville, West Lincoln, Grimsby, Beamsville, Stoney Creek, Winona, Ancaster, Caledonia, Binbrook and Dunnville. All repairs are carried out by a TSSA-certified gas technician and pressure-tested before the line goes back into service.

If You Smell Gas Right Now

Do not book a repair first. Do this instead:

  1. Do not operate anything electrical — light switches, thermostats, garage doors. A spark is a spark.
  2. Do not use a phone inside the building.
  3. Get everyone out of the building.
  4. From outside, call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427, open 24 hours.
  5. Call 911 if anyone feels unwell.

Enbridge will make the situation safe and shut off supply if needed. What they will not do is repair the piping inside your home — that is our work, and we can start once the area has been made safe.

What Usually Fails

Threaded Joints

The most common source. Pipe compound dries out, a fitting works loose through vibration, or a joint was slightly under-tightened years ago and has finally given up.

Corrosion

Anywhere pipe meets moisture. Basement floors, crawl spaces, the point where a buried line exits the ground, and exterior runs behind downspouts are the usual suspects in this area.

Physical Damage

A line knocked during a renovation, a buried line struck by a fence post or garden fork, or an exterior pipe hit by a vehicle or snow removal.

Shut-Off Valves

Valves seize or weep at the stem, especially ones that have not been turned in twenty years. Replacement is usually simpler and cheaper than trying to rehabilitate one.

Flexible Connectors

The short flexible line between a rigid pipe and an appliance has a service life. Older connectors, and any that have been bent or kinked when an appliance was moved, are worth replacing rather than reusing.

How We Find a Leak

Finding the leak is most of the job. We start with an electronic gas detector to narrow down the area, then confirm the exact point with a leak-detection solution at each joint. Where the location is not obvious, we isolate sections and pressure-test them individually to work out which branch is losing pressure.

For buried exterior lines we trace the run first, because digging in the wrong place is expensive and pointless. Locating properly before excavating saves both time and your lawn.

Repair, Not Patch

Where a joint has failed, we remake it properly. Where a section of pipe is corroded, we replace the section rather than treating the one hole that happened to leak first — corrosion is rarely a single point, and a patch on a bad run simply moves the next failure a few feet along.

After any repair the line is pressure-tested and held, then every joint on the affected section is leak-checked at working pressure once gas is restored. We relight and verify every appliance on that branch before we leave, rather than leaving you to work out why the water heater is cold.

Repair or Replace?

Sometimes the honest answer is that repairing an old run is throwing money at it. If piping is widely corroded, undersized for the appliances now on it, or was modified repeatedly over the years into something nobody can follow, replacing the branch is the better value. We will tell you which situation you are in and price both, rather than quietly choosing the more expensive one.

Book a Gas Line Repair
