Furnace maintenance in Smithville is one visit a year that does two jobs. A furnace that has been cleaned and adjusted burns less gas for the same heat. The same visit is also when we look at the heat exchanger and the gas connections, the two parts that can put carbon monoxide into the air blown through your house. A furnace gives no warning when it is due, and nobody calls to book it, which is why this is the heating job most often skipped.
How Often a Furnace Needs Servicing in Smithville
Once a year, in the fall. TSSA asks for a TSSA-certified fuels technician to check your furnace and every other fuel-burning appliance in the house every year. (4) Natural Resources Canada puts a gas furnace at least every two years, and an oil furnace on an annual clean and tune. (1)
Both numbers are right, because the two bodies are answering different questions. NRCan is answering about running costs, and a furnace cleaned every second year still saves fuel. (1) TSSA is answering about carbon monoxide, and that risk does not average out across two winters. (4) Follow the yearly answer and both are covered.
Book it in the fall. NRCan says to schedule the heating check-up as the seasons change, which puts it ahead of the first cold week rather than in the middle of it. (2)
What a Furnace Service Covers
The federal government publishes its own check-up list, and it is a fair description of what a furnace service is for. (2) It runs:
- the thermostat settings (2)
- every electrical connection tightened, with voltage and current measured on the motors (2)
- all moving parts lubricated (2)
- the condensate drain checked (2)
- the controls tested, so the furnace starts, runs and shuts off the way it should (2)
- the gas connections, the gas pressure, the burner combustion and the heat exchanger (2)
Two of those items have a reason worth stating. Friction in an unlubricated motor raises the energy the furnace uses, so the lubrication is not housekeeping. (2) A plugged condensate drain can cause water damage in the house and affect indoor humidity. (2)
The last item on that list is the regulated half. TSSA certifies the technicians permitted to install, maintain or alter fuels equipment in Ontario, and issues the G.1, G.2 and G.3 Gas Technician classes by name. (5) Mike Peddle holds a TSSA Gas Technician certificate and a TSSA Heating Contractor registration.
The Heat Exchanger Is Why the Gas Side Gets Checked
Inside a furnace, the burner flame and the air that goes to your rooms are kept apart by one steel component called the heat exchanger. Heat is meant to pass through it while the exhaust stays on the burner side and leaves through the vent.
Natural Resources Canada states the consequence directly: a leaking or loose gas connection, a dirty burner or a cracked heat exchanger can make a furnace run less safely and less efficiently. (2) Safety and efficiency fail together here. You notice the efficiency half on your gas bill, and nothing in the house tells you about the safety half.
TSSA’s answer is the yearly check plus alarms. Put a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm on each floor of the home, test them regularly, and change the batteries at least once a year. (3) Without alarms, TSSA says, the only way to know carbon monoxide is present is when the physical symptoms of poisoning appear, and by then it may be too late to avoid injury. (4)
What You Can Do Between Services
TSSA publishes a homeowner list, and none of it involves opening the furnace. (3)
- Keep the area around the furnace clear of dust, rags and lint, and keep chemicals out of the furnace room. (3)
- Do not lean anything against the furnace or the water heater, and do not hang laundry on either. (3)
- Check that internal vents are clear of obstruction and debris. (3)
- After a heavy snowstorm, go outside and check that nothing is blocking the air intake and exhaust pipes. (3)
That last one is the Niagara item. A furnace that vents through an outside wall can have its intake buried by a single storm, or by the snow a plow throws back against the house.
Changing the filter is the other thing you can do yourself. Neither NRCan nor TSSA says how often, and both point at the manufacturer’s instructions instead. (2)(3) NRCan does say why it matters: a dirty filter raises energy costs and can damage the furnace. (2)
What Affects Furnace Maintenance Cost in Smithville
- How long it has been since the last service. A furnace serviced last autumn and one nobody has touched since 2019 are not the same visit.
- Whether it is the furnace alone, or the furnace and a second gas appliance in the same house.
- What the previous service found, and whether anything was left to watch.
- Where the furnace sits. A furnace in a finished basement is a different job from one in a crawl space.
- The drive out, toward Caledonia or West Lincoln.
None of those five can be known from a phone call, which is why a real number comes once someone has seen the furnace.
Furnace Maintenance Questions From Smithville Homeowners
Do I really need to service my furnace every year?
Yes. TSSA asks for a TSSA-certified fuels technician to check fuel-burning appliances every year, and that is the carbon monoxide answer. (4) Natural Resources Canada says a gas furnace can go two years, but it is answering about fuel costs, not safety. (1)
What is included in a furnace tune-up?
The published list comes from Natural Resources Canada. (2) It covers thermostat settings, electrical connections and motor readings, lubrication, the condensate drain and the controls, then on the gas side the connections, the gas pressure, the burner combustion and the heat exchanger. (2) That is their list rather than a description of any one contractor’s visit.
When should I book a furnace service in Smithville?
In the fall. NRCan says to schedule the heating check-up as the seasons begin to change, which means before the first cold week rather than during it. (2)
Can I do the maintenance myself?
Some of it. The filter, the space around the furnace, the internal vents and the outdoor intake after snow are all yours. (3) The gas connections, the gas pressure, the burner and the heat exchanger are regulated work in Ontario and need a TSSA-certified technician. (5)
Does servicing my furnace keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid?
Check the warranty document that came with the furnace, because the answer is in there and it varies by manufacturer. Some require documented annual servicing and some do not, so the only reliable answer is the one in your own paperwork.
Book a Furnace Service in Smithville
Call the office to book a furnace service. Two details save time: the age of the furnace, and roughly when it was last serviced. Environmental Heating & Cooling has been family-owned since 2014 and is rated 5.0 on Google. Smithville, Grimsby, Beamsville, Caledonia and West Lincoln are all on the run.
Where the yearly service is only part of the question, the furnaces page covers sizing, fitting and looking after a gas furnace.
