Grimsby sits between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment, halfway between Hamilton and St. Catharines. Within that narrow strip are three very different kinds of house: the old summer cottages at Grimsby Beach, the older homes around downtown, and the townhouses and newer streets the town keeps adding. Grimsby Beach Cottages Were Built for Summer
Grimsby Beach began with a Methodist temperance rally on the lakeshore in 1846. According to the Town of Grimsby, the land became a camp ground in 1875, and Edward Bowslaugh built cottages on the newly divided lots for visitors who stayed the whole summer. Those cottages are still the clearest link to the area’s history.
A house built for July behaves differently in January. Many of these cottages are now lived in all year, but they were never designed for it: the walls are thin, there is rarely any ductwork, and the lots sit close together. Adding a furnace means finding a route for ducts that the building was never planned around.
A ductless heat pump solves most of that. It heats and cools through small indoor units on the wall, needs no ducts, and the outdoor unit fits on a narrow lot. Every cottage has been changed by different owners over the years, so we look at the cottage itself before recommending a size.
A Growing Town With Nowhere to Spread
The Town describes Grimsby as one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the Niagara Region, and its population rose 7.9 percent between 2011 and 2016. With the lake on one side and the Escarpment on the other, that growth has nowhere to go but up and inward. Much of it has arrived as townhouses and infill on smaller lots.
Townhouses bring their own limits. Shared walls and small yards leave little room for an outdoor unit, and a condominium board may have rules about where one can go. One of our customers described how we handled that in a Google review:

Newer homes are also sealed tightly, so moisture from showers and cooking stays inside unless something moves it out. A heat recovery ventilator swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air and keeps most of the warmth, which is usually the fix for foggy windows in winter.
A tight new townhouse also loses heat slowly. That makes it one of the best candidates in town for a cold-climate heat pump.
In the last two years alone, we have installed heating, cooling or water heating equipment in more than 30 Grimsby homes, and seven of them now run on a heat pump. Several are condominium and townhouse units, where the equipment has to fit a small space.
The Older Core and the Escarpment Slope
Around downtown, many houses have had their heating replaced several times. The ductwork often got squeezed through whatever space was available, so the room at the far end of the run never warms up properly. Rebalancing or rerouting those ducts usually fixes that room better than installing a bigger furnace.
Where a house sits in Grimsby also matters. Homes on the streets climbing towards the Escarpment tend to catch more wind than houses near the shore, so two homes of the same size can need different amounts of heat. We size equipment for the house and its spot, not for the square footage alone.
Summers by the lake are sticky. An air conditioner that is too big for the house cools the rooms before it has time to pull the water out, so the air stays damp. Sizing it correctly matters, and in some houses a dehumidifier does the rest.

Questions From Grimsby Homeowners
My furnace needs replacing. Should I put in another furnace or a heat pump? For many Grimsby homes, a cold-climate heat pump is worth pricing first, because it also replaces the air conditioner. If the ductwork or the house is not ready for one, a dual-fuel system pairs the heat pump with a gas furnace that takes over in deep cold. If the old furnace can still be saved, furnace repair may buy time to plan the replacement properly.
Can a heat pump heat an old Grimsby Beach cottage? Yes, usually with a ductless system. It needs no ductwork, the indoor units mount on the wall, and it provides air conditioning in the summer as well.
