Why Your Water Runs Cold, and Why Turning the Tank Up Is Not the Answer

Turning the dial up is the first thing most people try when the hot water runs out early. It covers a fault for a week and it raises the risk of a scald.

Health Canada sets two temperatures, and they differ on purpose. Keep the tank itself at 60°C, because harmful bacteria such as Legionella grow in water held cooler than that. (2) Then fit a mixing valve, which brings the water down to 49°C before it reaches a tap. (2)

That gap is worth the plumbing. A child’s skin burns in a quarter of the time an adult’s skin takes. (2) In a house with no mixing valve, water leaving the tank at 60°C arrives at the bathtub tap at 60°C.

A tank that runs cold early has a fault, and the dial is not it. A burner short of gas, a failed element, or sediment lying between the burner and the water will each cut the hot water you get.

What We Do on a Water Heater Repair Call

We start at the vent, not at the tank. A gas water heater pushes its exhaust outside through a pipe, and a blocked or disconnected vent sends that exhaust back into the basement.

Carbon monoxide is why that check comes first. You cannot see it, smell it or taste it, so nothing in the room warns you. (3) The Technical Standards and Safety Authority counts four to six fuel-burning appliances in a typical Ontario home, and about 65 percent of carbon monoxide incidents happen inside homes. (3)
