A water heater gives very little warning. This page covers two situations: the tank has already failed, or you have decided not to wait until it does. Water heater installation in Smithville comes down to three decisions: what size tank the house actually needs, what fuel it runs on, and who is legally allowed to connect it. Sizing is the one most people get wrong.
When to Replace a Water Heater Instead of Repairing It
Water pooling under the tank means a replacement rather than a repair. A storage tank rusts from the inside out, so by the time water reaches the floor the steel wall has already corroded through, and a corroded wall cannot be patched.
If it has not leaked yet, Natural Resources Canada still makes a case for replacing the tank before it fails rather than after. Changing it while it still works lets you make an informed choice instead of a rushed one. (1)
Planning ahead buys you time, and time changes three things. We can size the tank against your own hot water use, you can compare models properly, and you can get any rebate paperwork done before the work starts. Once the tank has failed, you are making all three of those decisions under pressure.
If your house is in one of the parts of West Lincoln or Haldimand without natural gas service, your choice is between propane and electric.
How We Size a Water Heater for a Smithville Home
Judge a water heater by its first hour rating, not by its tank size. (1) The first hour rating is how much hot water it can supply in one hour, starting from a full tank. (1) It runs higher than the tank’s volume, because the heater reheats while you are drawing on it. It should match or exceed the most your house uses in an hour. (1)
- Count the showers inside that hour.
- Add the sinks, dishwasher and laundry running alongside them.
- Compare only models of similar capacity, because models of different capacities cannot be compared. (2)
An eight-minute shower through a low-flow head uses about 30 litres of hot water. (1) Three showers one after another need about 90 litres inside that hour.
Bigger is not safer. Natural Resources Canada warns against oversizing, because a larger tank costs more to buy and loses more heat while it sits full, which increases your energy bill over time. (1)
On the visit we look at the house itself: how many bathrooms it has, when the hot water gets used most, and whether two people shower at the same time. In an older Smithville house the tank often sits in a tight basement corner, so the space around it can rule out some models before we get to the sizing at all.
What Ontario Law Requires Before Anyone Touches a Gas Water Heater
You are not allowed to make the gas connection yourself. In Ontario that work belongs to a technician TSSA has certified, working for a registered contractor. TSSA puts the duty on the business: registered contractors are responsible for ensuring the technicians they hire are properly trained and certified to perform the tasks they are assigned. (3)
TSSA enforces it. In March 2023 it fined an Ontario contractor for employing an uncertified worker to install a natural gas water heater. (3) The penalty landed on the business that sent him rather than on the household that let him in.
Mike Peddle holds a TSSA Gas Technician certificate. Ask to see that certificate before the work starts, on every quote you collect, ours included.
What Happens on Installation Day
The sequence is the same in every house.
1. We shut off the gas or the power, and the cold water supply. 2. We drain the old tank and disconnect it. 3. We carry it out of the house. This is the step the route matters for. 4. We set the new tank in place, level it, and connect the water, the fuel and the vent. 5. We fill the tank and purge the air out of the lines before anything is lit. 6. We check the connections for leaks and set the temperature.
Two of those are worth explaining. A gas tank sends its exhaust outdoors through a vent. A vent sized for the old tank does not always suit the new one, so we check it rather than assume it fits.
The purge is not optional either. Rheem, who build the equipment we install, tell installers to run water through a new unit for two to three minutes to flush the air pockets out of the lines. (4) Skipping that step, they warn, can permanently damage the unit. (4)
What Affects Water Heater Installation Cost in Smithville
Five things change the quote:
- whether the new tank runs on the same fuel, or you are switching
- the size of the tank
- the vent and the gas line, and whether either has to be changed to suit it
- whether the tank stays, or moves to a different spot
- getting the old tank out of the house
Then there is the cost almost nobody adds up. Natural Resources Canada calls it the second price tag: a water heater costs more to run across its life than it costs to buy or to rent. (1) That turns the efficiency rating into a monthly cost rather than a single purchase price.
An ENERGY STAR certified storage tank uses 14 percent less energy on average than a standard model. (5) One limit comes with that: only gas-fired storage tank water heaters can qualify for ENERGY STAR. (5)
There is a rebate, but not for a storage tank like the one you have. Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings pays on heat pump water heaters, and the model has to be ENERGY STAR certified. (6) The money also arrives only as part of a bundle of two or more upgrades, following a home energy assessment. (6) No amount appears here, because the program sets it and changes it. Environmental Heating & Cooling has claimed over $2 million in rebates for customers.
Water Heater Installation Questions From Smithville Homeowners
Can I install a water heater myself in Ontario?
Not the gas side. The gas connection is reserved for a TSSA-certified technician employed by a registered contractor, and TSSA holds that contractor responsible for the certification of everyone it sends. (3) An uncertified install is what the March 2023 fine was for. (3)
Is a bigger tank always the safer choice?
No. The federal advice is against oversizing, because a larger tank costs more up front and loses more heat standing full, which raises the running cost for hot water nobody uses. (1)
What does the ENERGY STAR label on a water heater mean?
It means the model uses 14 percent less energy on average than a standard one. (5) On storage tanks the label is narrower than people expect: only gas-fired models can earn it. (5)
Can I get a rebate on a new water heater in Smithville?
Only on a heat pump water heater. The model must carry ENERGY STAR certification, and the payment comes through a bundle of two or more upgrades that follows a home energy assessment. (6)
Do you work outside Smithville?
Yes. Grimsby, Beamsville, Caledonia and the rest of West Lincoln are all part of the service area.
Book a Water Heater Installation in Smithville
Book a visit and we size the tank in the house, not over the phone. It helps to know what the current tank burns, roughly how old it is, and how many people draw hot water in your busiest hour. Environmental Heating & Cooling has been family-owned since 2014 and is rated 5.0 on Google.
If you have not settled on a tank at all yet, the water heaters page covers renting, owning and the rest of the hot water options.
