Delivery Is Not Installation

The delivery team brings the appliance into the room and takes the packaging away. Connecting it to the gas is a different job. It is sold on its own, and in most cases booked on its own too.

This part is where most people get caught out. The range arrives on a Tuesday, and it sits unusable until somebody certified can get there.

In Ontario the person who connects it has to hold a certificate for gas work. The regulation states that no person may install, alter, repair or service anything used in the handling of gas without one. It makes no exception for a delivery driver or a homeowner. (1)

So the question worth asking before you buy is not whether installation is available. It is who is doing it, and when they can come.

If there is no gas line reaching the spot at all, that is a bigger job than a connection, and it means running a new line to reach it.

The most common job we do. A range needs a shut-off valve within reach, a connector rated for the appliance, and enough clearance behind it once it is pushed back.

Gas Dryers

A dryer needs the gas connection and the vent to be right. A blocked or too-long vent run makes the dryer work harder and takes longer to dry a load.

Barbecues and Outdoor Kitchens

A permanent line means no more tanks. The connection sits outside, so it needs a shut-off you can reach and a line run that survives every Niagara winter.

Garage and Shop Heaters

Common on rural properties out toward West Lincoln. Venting and clearance matter more here than anywhere, because the space is smaller than people think.

Pool and Spa Heaters

The Three Things That Go Wrong for an Appliance Install

Almost every bad appliance install we are called out to fix comes down to one of three things.

1. Nobody Checked the Supply

The line was sized for a furnace and a water heater, and now it is feeding a range as well. Each appliance gets less gas than it needs, so the new one never reaches the output on its rating plate.

2. The Connector Is Reused

The old flexible connector goes back on the new appliance because it is already there. Connectors get bent every time the appliance is pulled out for cleaning, and a connector that has been moved three times is not one to trust on a new install.

3. Venting Is Treated as Optional

This is the one that matters most. An appliance that cannot vent as it should burns without enough air, and Enbridge names a bad installation as one source of carbon monoxide in the home. (2)

What We Do on an Appliance Install

Check the supply first. We work out whether the line can carry this appliance alongside everything else on it, before anything gets connected.

Fit a new connector. Not the old one, whatever condition it looks to be in.

Confirm venting and clearances against what the manufacturer specifies for that model, not against what fitted the old one.

Leak test the connection, then run the appliance and confirm it is working as it should. Testing the connection before we leave is part of every job, not extra.

Converting Between Natural Gas and Propane

Appliances are built for one fuel. Moving an appliance from natural gas to propane, or back, means fitting the manufacturer’s conversion kit rather than adjusting anything by eye.

Two things change: the orifice, which is the small opening the gas passes through, and the regulator, which controls the pressure. Both have to match the fuel.

Get it wrong and the appliance burns with too much gas or too little air. That brings you straight back to the venting problem and the carbon monoxide risk with it. (2)
