HVAC in Stoney Creek, Ontario

Stoney Creek climbs from the Lake Ontario shore, over the Niagara Escarpment, and out across the farmland of Upper Stoney Creek. It is part of the City of Hamilton, and the City lists it among its two fastest-growing communities. Most of that growth has landed on top of the Escarpment, while the older streets below it have changed far less. HVAC in Stoney Creek depends on which side of the brow your house is on. We are Environmental Heating & Cooling, a Smithville family business since 2014, rated 5.0 on Google and under half an hour away.

Upper Stoney Creek Grew by a Quarter in Five Years

The City describes Ward 9, Upper Stoney Creek, as the ward that “sits above the escarpment.” Between 2016 and 2021 its population rose 25.1 percent, from 28,760 to 35,980, and it gained about 2,085 occupied homes, much of it in new subdivisions.

Many newer homes in Ontario were built with a heat recovery ventilator, or HRV. It pulls stale air out of the house and brings fresh air in, passing both streams through a core that saves most of the heat. Its filters and core need cleaning, and a neglected HRV shows up as stale rooms or water on the windows in winter. If your Upper Stoney Creek house has one, have it cleaned on a schedule. Our HRV and ERV page explains what that involves.

Not all of Upper Stoney Creek is subdivision, though. Upper Centennial Parkway splits Ward 9 into an urban part and a rural part, and the City puts the rural part at about 81 percent of the ward’s land. Out on those farm roads, some older houses still heat with propane or oil. For those homes, price a cold-climate heat pump before you replace the old system, because the savings over propane or oil are usually larger than over natural gas.

Up on the Mountain, a house can also face more wind than one tucked below the brow. That matters for where an outdoor unit sits, because drifting snow and gusts can choke its airflow in winter. When the builder’s air conditioner wears out, a cold-climate heat pump in the same spot can cool the house and carry much of the heating too.

The Older Neighbourhoods Below the Escarpment

Below the brow, the City’s Ward 10 covers Lower Stoney Creek, Fruitland and Winona, between the Escarpment and Lake Ontario. It grew only 5.4 percent over the same five years. These are mostly established streets, and the old heart of the town is here. Battlefield Park, at the edge of the Escarpment, marks the Battle of Stoney Creek, fought on June 6, 1813, and was made a National Historic Site in 1960.

In older houses, the ductwork has often been changed more than the furnace. A common example is the finished basement. Renovators close in the joists and the return-air grilles disappear behind new drywall. Without enough return air, the furnace cannot pull air back from the rooms, so heat stops circulating and some rooms stay cold. One of our customers described fixing exactly this in a Google review:

“We had them install a humidifier on our furnace and replace missing return air duct work.” — Matt Q.

Gas piping in these homes has usually been extended as well, for a dryer, a stove or a garage heater, often by different people over the years. If nobody knows who ran yours, book a gas safety inspection.

Our Work in Stoney Creek

In the last two years alone, we have installed heating, cooling or water heating equipment in more than 20 Stoney Creek homes. About half of those homes got a new furnace and a new air conditioner at the same time. Several of them now run on a heat pump.

How We Get to Stoney Creek

From Smithville, the quickest route is usually the QEW, about 30 kilometres and 27 minutes. Ridge Road, along the top of the Escarpment, takes a couple of minutes longer. We cover the lakeshore, the older streets below the brow and the new subdivisions on the Mountain. We also serve neighbouring Winona and Grimsby to the east and Binbrook to the south.

What We Do for Stoney Creek Homes

  • Heating: furnace repair and replacement, plus return-air fixes for finished basements.
  • Heat pumps: cold-climate and dual-fuel systems for the Mountain’s newer homes and the older houses below.
  • Air conditioning: repairs and new installations for houses above and below the Escarpment.
  • Indoor air quality: HRV cleaning, humidifiers and filtration.
  • Water heaters: tank, tankless and heat pump models, sold outright. We do not rent water heaters.
  • Gas services: new gas lines, leak detection and inspections of old piping.

Company-wide, our team has moved 174 homes to greener heating and helped claim over one million dollars in rebates. Rebates come and go, so check what your house qualifies for before you commit to new equipment.

Questions From Stoney Creek Homeowners

Our furnace is the one that came with the house. Should we replace it with a furnace or a heat pump? Price both before you decide. A cold-climate heat pump replaces the air conditioner as well, and a dual-fuel system keeps a gas furnace for the coldest weeks. If the furnace still runs safely, furnace repair in Stoney Creek can give you time to plan.

Our newer house on the Mountain has an HRV. Does it need servicing? Yes. The filters need cleaning several times a year, and the core needs cleaning too. A dirty HRV moves less air, so the house feels stuffy and moisture builds up on the windows.

Since we finished the basement, some rooms are colder than before. Why? The renovation may have covered up return-air grilles or cut off a return duct. The furnace then cannot draw enough air back, so warm air stops reaching the far rooms. Opening up or adding return air usually fixes it.

What do I do if I smell gas? Get everyone out of the house, then call Enbridge Gas from outside on 1-866-763-5427, or dial 911. When Enbridge has made the house safe, we can find and fix the leak.
