Buying the appliance is the easy part. Connecting it to gas safely, venting it correctly and proving it burns cleanly is where a certified technician earns their keep — and where a lot of “the delivery guys hooked it up” stories go wrong.
Environmental Heating & Cooling connects gas appliances across Smithville, West Lincoln, Grimsby, Beamsville, Stoney Creek, Winona, Ancaster, Caledonia, Binbrook and Dunnville.
Appliances We Connect
Gas Ranges and Cooktops
The most common kitchen upgrade. Often needs a new branch run to the kitchen, plus a correctly placed shut-off valve behind the appliance that you can actually reach.
Gas Dryers
Usually simple where the laundry sits near an existing line. Worth checking the exhaust duct at the same time — a restricted dryer vent is a fire risk regardless of fuel.
Barbecues and Outdoor Kitchens
A permanent gas line means no more tank swaps mid-cook. Requires an exterior-rated shut-off and a quick-disconnect fitting so the barbecue can still be moved.
Garage and Shop Heaters
Popular locally, and the install where clearances and venting matter most. A heater in a garage shares space with a vehicle, fuel and stored materials, so it needs mounting height, clearance to combustibles and combustion air done properly.
Pool and Spa Heaters
High-demand appliances. These are the units that most often reveal an undersized gas supply, because they can draw more than everything else in the house combined.
Standby Generators
A natural gas generator that cannot draw enough fuel will not deliver its rated output, which is a problem you discover during the outage rather than before it.
Fireplaces and Inserts

The Three Things That Go Wrong
1. Nobody Checked the Supply
An appliance is connected to whatever pipe happens to be nearby, without adding its demand to what is already on that branch. The install passes the day it is done and starves everything on the line the first time several appliances run together.
2. The Connector Is Reused
Flexible connectors have a service life and should not be re-bent or reinstalled after an appliance has been moved. A kinked connector is a future leak.
3. Venting Is Treated as Optional
Anything that burns gas indoors and produces exhaust needs that exhaust to go outside reliably. This is where carbon monoxide risk lives, and it is invisible when done wrong.
What We Do on an Appliance Install
- Confirm the existing gas supply can carry the new appliance along with everything already on it.
- Run or extend piping where required, sized for the load.
- Fit a shut-off valve in an accessible location — not buried behind the appliance where nobody can reach it in a hurry.
- Make the final connection with a new connector rated for the appliance.
- Verify venting and combustion air where the appliance produces exhaust.
- Pressure-test, leak-check every joint, fire the appliance and confirm it burns cleanly.
A Note on Delivery and Big-Box Installs
Appliance delivery teams are often not certified to connect gas, and many retailers say so in the fine print while still leaving the impression that hookup is included. If you are buying a gas range or dryer, ask directly who is making the gas connection and what certification they hold. If the answer is vague, arrange the connection separately.
This is not a sales pitch so much as the reason we get called out to fix so many of them.
Converting Between Natural Gas and Propane
Many appliances can be converted with the manufacturer’s kit, and many cannot. The orifices and the regulator both have to match the fuel. Check before you buy, especially if you are moving an appliance between properties on different fuels.
