Adding a gas appliance to your home means running a gas line to it, connecting it, and proving the whole system is tight before it is used. In Ontario that work must be done by a TSSA-certified gas technician. We do it, we permit it where required, and we test it.
Environmental Heating & Cooling installs gas across Smithville, West Lincoln, Grimsby, Beamsville, Stoney Creek, Winona, Ancaster, Caledonia, Binbrook and Dunnville.
What Gas Installation Covers
Most homeowners think of a gas install as one job. In practice it is three:
1. The Supply
Running new pipe from your meter or from an existing branch to the appliance location, sized for the load it has to carry.
2. The Connection
Fitting the shut-off valve, the flexible connector and the regulator, then making the final tie-in to the appliance.
3. The Proof
Pressure-testing the line, leak-checking every joint, confirming the appliance fires correctly, and verifying the venting where the appliance produces exhaust.
Skipping the third step is what separates a cheap install from a safe one. It is also the step you cannot see once the work is finished, which is exactly why it matters who you hire.
Sizing: The Part Most People Never Hear About
Gas pipe is sized by how much gas has to travel through it, measured in BTUs, and by how far it has to travel. A line that is comfortably sized for one appliance can be undersized the moment a second is added to the same branch.
The symptom is not always dramatic. An undersized line often shows up as a furnace that struggles on the coldest night of the year, or a range burner that drops off when the water heater fires. It looks like an appliance fault. It is a supply problem.
When we quote an installation we look at the whole house, not just the appliance in front of us, and we ask what else you are likely to add. Running slightly larger pipe on the first visit costs very little. Re-running it in two years costs a great deal.
What We Commonly Install
- Gas ranges and cooktops — the most common kitchen conversion, and one that often needs a new branch run.
- Gas dryers — usually straightforward if the laundry is near an existing line.
- Barbecue and patio lines — a permanent connection means never swapping a propane tank again.
- Garage and shop heaters — popular locally, and a job where venting and clearances matter more than most people expect.
- Gas fireplaces and inserts — see our gas fireplace installation page.
- Pool and spa heaters — high-demand appliances that frequently expose an undersized supply.
- Standby generators — a natural gas generator needs a correctly sized line to run at full output.
- Furnaces, boilers and water heaters — new high-efficiency equipment often has different gas and venting requirements than the unit it replaces.
What the Process Looks Like
- Site visit. We look at your meter, your existing gas load, the route the new line has to take, and where the appliance will sit.
- Quote. A fixed price covering pipe, fittings, labour, permit and testing. No surprises partway through.
- Permit. Where the work requires it, we handle the paperwork.
- Installation. Most residential gas runs are a one-day job. Longer runs or finished-basement routing can take two.
- Test and commission. Pressure test, leak check every joint, fire the appliance, confirm venting and combustion.
New Connections and Conversions
If your home has no gas service at all, the connection from the street to your meter is Enbridge’s work, not ours. Once the meter is in place, everything on your side of it is ours. We are happy to talk you through the sequence so the two halves line up and you are not left waiting.
Converting an appliance from propane to natural gas, or the reverse, is also possible on many units with the correct conversion kit. Not all appliances can be converted, so ask before you buy.
