A gas fireplace is the one heating appliance people buy for how it looks and keep for how it works. It lights instantly, needs no wood, produces no ash, and — unlike most of your heating system — keeps running when the power is out, if it is the right type.

Environmental Heating & Cooling installs gas fireplaces and inserts across Smithville, West Lincoln, Grimsby, Beamsville, Stoney Creek, Winona, Ancaster, Caledonia, Binbrook and Dunnville.

The Three Types, and Which Suits You

Insert

Fits inside an existing masonry fireplace. This is the common upgrade for an older home with a wood fireplace that is used twice a year and loses heat up the chimney the rest of the time. The existing chimney is lined to serve the insert.

Built-In (Zero Clearance)

A new fireplace framed into a wall where none existed. The most flexible option for a renovation, because the location is not dictated by an existing chimney. Venting runs out through a wall or up through the roof.

Freestanding Stove

A gas stove that sits in the room like a wood stove. Radiates heat from all sides, which makes it efficient for warming a single space, and it suits older homes visually.

Direct Vent vs Natural Vent

This is the specification that matters most and the one buyers hear about least.

A direct-vent fireplace is sealed from the room. It draws combustion air from outside through one pipe and exhausts through another, and the glass front stays closed. It cannot pull heated air out of your house, and it cannot spill combustion products into the room. For a modern, well-sealed home this is almost always the right answer.

A natural-vent appliance draws combustion air from the room and vents up a chimney. It relies on draft, and draft can be affected by a tight house, a range hood or a bathroom fan competing for air.

If you are choosing between two units and one is direct vent, that is usually the one worth having.

Heat During a Power Cut

Many gas fireplaces use a standing pilot with a thermopile, which generates its own millivolt current. That means the fireplace will light and run with no electricity at all. Models with an electronic ignition generally need power, though some offer a battery backup.

For a rural property or anywhere on a line that goes down in an ice storm, this is worth asking about before you buy. A fireplace that works in an outage is a genuinely different appliance from one that does not.

What the Installation Involves

  1. Assessment. Where the fireplace will go, what venting route is available, and whether your gas supply can carry it alongside your existing appliances.
  2. Gas supply. Running or extending a correctly sized line to the fireplace location.
  3. Venting. Installing the vent run and terminating it at the correct clearances from windows, doors, soffits and property lines. For an insert, this includes lining the existing chimney.
  4. Set and connect. Positioning the unit, making the gas connection, fitting an accessible shut-off.
  5. Commission. Pressure-test, leak-check, light the appliance, verify combustion and vent performance, and set up the controls with you.

Clearances to combustibles, mantel heights and hearth requirements come from the manufacturer’s instructions for that specific unit, and they vary more than people expect. A surround that is fine for one model is not automatically fine for another.

Annual Servicing

Gas fireplaces are low maintenance, not no maintenance. Glass gets a film, the pilot assembly collects dust, logs shift out of position and burn incorrectly, and the vent termination can be blocked by nests or snow. An annual check keeps the flame picture right and confirms the venting is clear before the season you actually use it.

Book a Gas Fireplace Installation
